Dipping into the past: 4k windfall

Over the next couple of weeks, a few articles will be popping up from bygone years - having a look to see what happened and what's changed.

Bromyard Bowls Club has received a £4,326 cash windfall from the National Lottery.

The club is one of 19 in Herefordshire to benefit from the Awards For All scheme, which is aimed at helping small community, voluntary and charity groups.

The club will use the cash to extend its facilities to include a function room and kitchen.

Stephen Thomas, who along with his wife Joan is in charge of the Tenbury Road club's fundraising, said: "We're very pleased. This award is exactly what we asked for.
"Phase one of our project, which we have completed, was to renovate the old portable building to provide ladies and gents changing facilities, disabled access, lighting, toilets, veranda and ramp.
'The second phase, which this money allows us to do is to acquire another building, an old classroom in fact, install it and convert it to become a function room with kitchen."

Mr Thomas said that although membership had been falling, the trend had been arrested and now numbers were rising.
