Bromyard has a low crime rate, but please be aware because with the arrival of some good weather (at long last), please be mindful of doorstep callers. In particular, those offering to pressure wash drives, patios, fence panels etc. Also, anyone offering to fix so-called leaking gutters, loose roof tiles, cut back trees, tarmac drives. Cold callers who offer to do building work, gardening or driveways are highly likely to be rogue traders.
Fit and use a door security chain every time you open the door to someone you do not know, ALWAYS ask for identification that you can verify and do not under no circumstances allow the caller into your home until you have verified the caller's identification.
Do not allow cold callers to make you feel intimidated or under pressure to have them do work for you. Some can be very 'pushy'. Simply tell them to leave. If they persist, tell them you will phone the Police.
Anyone offering to carry out work at your home should provide a written contract, contracts for work over £35 which are made anywhere other than at the trader's usual business premises must have a 7 day cooling off period. Contents and wording of these contracts must comply with regulations. Failure to do so is committing a criminal offence which will be investigated by the Trading Standards Service. For further advice, please contact Herefordshire Trading Standards on tel 01432 261761.
Please keep an eye on elderly and/or vulnerable neighbours, look out for possible rogue traders or bogus callers taking advantage of them. If you see someone you don't know call on a neighbour or doing work for them and you are in any way concerned as to their legitimacy, phone the Police immediately.
Finally, we are aware of a blue Tata pick up, registration starting KU52, containing a man and a woman who have been doing the rounds touting for work, mainly pressure washing. Please let us know if you see this vehicle (phone 101). We believe the occupants are committing trading standards offences. Have they visited you??
