If when a player delivers his/her wood and the jack go in the ditch, the wood is marked with chalked and this is known as a live wood (toucher to the average bowler). The wood and the jack are left in the ditch (as long as they're in the confines of the rink; if not they're removed from play). These are the marked by a marker on the bank above the ditch; white for the jack and red for the wood.
If, for example, a wood hits a jack that is already in the ditch, it is not counted as a live wood and is removed.
If a wood does not go into the ditch but the jack does, the wood is marked with chalk in the same manner. If this gets hit into the ditch by another wood, it is counted a live wood and is left.
Live wood: A wood that is in the ditch after touching the jack.
